What is an orofacial myofunctional disorder?
An OMD is anything that disrupts the normal function of the stomatognathic system (teeth, jaws and associated soft tissues): recurring behaviors and postures, such as mouth-breathing, thumb-sucking, and pacifier use, neurological deficiencies, developmental delays, hereditary predisposition and, or functional issues, such as tongue ties, lip ties, upper airway obstructions and weak muscle tone, can upset one’s correct development of oral and facial muscle functions and have a damaging influence both on the form and function of the orofacial complex.
Optimal craniofacial & orofaciall
growth and
function
Early intervention yields the greatest results and can effect major change.
- 60% of the face’s growth is done by 6 years of age
- 90% of the face’s growth is done by 12 years of age
- 100% of the face’s growth is done by 18 years of age, but positive structural & functional changes with exercises can occur no matter what age you are.
