What is Orofacial
Myofunctional
Therapy?

The Myofunctional Me program is the holistic & integrative neuromuscular retraining of the orofacial & pharyngeal muscles and to encourage correct development of the teeth, jaws, airway and craniospinal posture by correcting the passive and active orofacial postures and movements of chewing, breathing (in wakefulness/sleep/exercise), swallowing & speaking with a developmental approach in a collaborative process of care with other healthcare providers. The specific goals are:

  • Eliminate nonnutritive oral habits

  • Improve passive and active tongue posture & tonicity

  • Achieve lip seal & orofacial and airway competence

  • Establish nasal breathing

  • Achieve proper chewing and swallowing

What is an orofacial myofunctional disorder?

An OMD is anything that disrupts the normal function of the stomatognathic system (teeth, jaws and associated soft tissues): recurring behaviors and postures, such as mouth-breathing, thumb-sucking, and pacifier use, neurological deficiencies, developmental delays, hereditary predisposition and, or functional issues, such as tongue ties, lip ties, upper airway obstructions and weak muscle tone, can upset one’s correct development of oral and facial muscle functions and have a damaging influence both on the form and function of the orofacial complex.

Optimal craniofacial & orofaciall

growth and

function

Early intervention yields the greatest results and can effect major change.

  • 60% of the face’s growth is done by 6 years of age

  • 90% of the face’s growth is done by 12 years of age

  • 100% of the face’s growth is done by 18 years of age, but positive structural & functional changes with exercises can occur no matter what age you are.
